Crown Green Bowls is a sport which is played by thousands of people across the country and is accessible to anyone which makes it an excellent sport for young and old alike.
Leagues and ladders are now able to run throughout the whole year with the increasing number of indoor facilities that are available which has increased it's appeal.
Bowls is a sociable, fun sport which brings together elements of concentration, tactical awareness, bodily control, patience and skill. Although not an inherently physically demanding sport, it does place a high demand on mental ability with players having to concentrate for long periods of time, make tactical decisions and execute accurate shots over the period of play.
Fitness for bowls may seem a little bit of a strange concept but fitness is not all about being able to run around a pitch for hours on end or being able to lift heavy weights - fitness is a highly sport specific concept. A fit bowler will experience less fatigue during play which has two major benefits. Firstly, fatigue places great strain on mental capacity making it harder to concentrate and even harder to make the correct decision based upon evidence placed in front of us. Secondly, fatigue detracts from motor skill performance meaning that the least fit player will suffer the biggest drop off in performance and accuracy.
