Tennis is for everyone not just the professionals. It requires a level of good fitness if your going to win those long matches on a summers evening. Tennis, at the elite level, is an extremely demanding sport. It requires good fitness levels as matches can last over 4 hours, sometimes in extremely hot weather.
The best tennis player will be able to play the explosive smash or the delicate drop shot as well in the first minute as they will in the last. Fitness is also important to allow players to make the best decisions and maintain their split second reactions throughout the match.
Tennis player characteristics; split section reaction, good cardiovascular fitness, co-ordination, flexibility, upper and lower body strength, speed, agility and mental ability.
You can achieve all of these on and off the court but if you are fitter when you are on the court you will develop much quicker. Try our pre-season programme and build your base level of fitness which will then be developed into sport specific fitness when on the court.
Most tennis players will recognise the need to be quick and agile and many will train these fitness parameters to the detriment of others such as cardiovascular fitness and strength meaning that their performance on the court could be much better if they followed a sport specific, structured programme.
