Badminton, when played well, is a very demanding sport - the image of two people standing still gently hitting the shuttle cock to each other couldn't be further from the truth!
At high levels, badminton is an explosive, fast sport which demands quicker responses than almost any other sport. It requires a good player to be able to sprint, jump, twist, strike, lunge and above all concentrate during a game which takes place at a pace that most of us can't even imagine.
Fitness is extremely important for the good player to allow them to cope with the stresses of the modern game but although there are a lot of badminton clubs in the UK, not many of them provide physical, pre-season training. In order to get the most out of your time on the court, it is imperative that you prepare for the rigours of the season and this does not just entail practice match-play - you need to get fit and preferably before you realise how un-fit you are halfway through your first competitive game!
Complete Badminton players will have;
- good cardiovascular fitness
- hand/eye co-ordination
- flexibility
- reaction speed
- upper and lower body strength
- speed
