SIV aim to MEND child obesity epedemic in Sheffield
Families are being reminded that local programmes are in place to help them get active following reports that child obesity in Sheffield has reached epidemic proportions. Staff at Sheffield International Venues (SIV) are urging people in the city to take advantage of the advice and facilities on offer in Sheffield if they are dealing with issues of childhood obesity in their family. SIV facilities throughout Sheffield provide 10-week MEND programmes for children between 7 and 13 and Hillsborough Leisure Centre, Ponds Forge and Concord Sports Centre are all currently helping scores of families with the issues they face. Richard Apps, general manager at Hillsborough Leisure Centre, said: “It’s vitally important that people in Sheffield who may be experiencing the effects of child obesity are aware that we are here to help. “The initiative is for all the family involving wet and dry activities, team games and simple training plans to do at home. “The programme is be run by qualified MEND trainers and families who find themselves in this position can register for schemes at Hillsborough, Ponds Forge and Concord now.” It was reported that one in four children aged 10 to 11 are clinically obese or overweight in Sheffield, and that the rate of obesity increases as children move through primary school according to new government figures. The MEND initiative (which stands for Mind, Exercise, Nutrition…Do It!) is designed to combat obesity by involving the entire family in a healthy eating and active lifestyle programme.
